Do The Write Thing

Best of 2007 – More Previously Published Material

June 23, 2008 · 6 Comments

Yes, I understand that a recap of last year is a bit dated, but I just started a new job meaning I have less time to write completely new things. I assure you, fresh material is one the way.

These clips are from a spread printed in December 2007 highlighting the staff’s favorite new music, television, and movies of the past year.

Music
Sometimes, when the lead singer of one of your favorite bands starts stalking you on last.fm and Facebook, you are slightly flattered. Other times it’s extremely sketchy, especially by the time you learn that someone you thought was wicked cool starts sending you messages like “OMG YOU ARE HAWT” and including their phone number, especially when you haven’t responded to any of these messages. When something like this does happen, it’s best to put in Haunts by Bark Bark Bark, my favorite album of 2007. Any connection between an incident like this and Bark Bark Bark is dismissed because any band whose name originates from Duck Hunt is deemed cool by me.

Television

Dexter is perfection in TV form. Michael C. Hall of Six Feet Under fame plays Dexter Morgan, the ultimate serial killer. By day he works for the Miami PD in forensics, specializing in blood splatter. Unlike the killers he helps to catch at work, Dexter abides by a moral code, and systematically kills murder suspects who have escaped the criminal justice system. Here’s a television show not about rich, bratty high school kids.

Superbad
Confession: I not so secretly have a wall shrine to Michael Cera in my room. It *cough* does not consist of an entire door covered in Superbad magazine clippings. Something about awkwardness is surprisingly hot, and that makes me love Superbad. Usually, these kinds of comedies make me want to gauge my eyes out, but Superbad is surprisingly well written. Everything the main characters Seth and Evan say is pretty much brilliant. What? You don’t agree. That’s okay “Something like 8 percent of all kids have that problem…”
